Selma Cohen

Selma Cohen has a long history of volunteer leadership in the fields of education and community service. Her career in these areas extends back over 40 years and includes leadership roles at both the local and state level.

Selma grew up n Bridgeport, CT and was educated at Syracuse University, from which she received a B.A. in sociology. She also has a certificate in business management from Fairfield University.

During her career, Selma was elected to the Fairfield Board of Education and held numerous leadership positions including: Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary. She also was a member for over ten years of the Connecticut PTA Board of Directors and the Connecticut Principals Academy. Her service has included membership in numerous state committees including: the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education and the Connecticut Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Selma also was a long time member of the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee and the Fairfield Human Services Commission.

Selma has received numerous honors in recognition of her activism and accomplishments. These include: A "Distinguished Leadership Citation", the Dianna O. Kierman Memorial Award, and the Fairfield Education Association Distinguished Service Award. She has been published in the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Journal.

Selma was the wife of the late Stanley Cohen, M.D., a distinguished neurologist in the Bridgeport area. She raised two daughters and is the proud grandmother of five wonderful grandchildren. She enjoys travel, cultural arts, culinary arts and gardening.
